Subject:Wireshark and hex 0A
Time:2:31 pm.
When trying to replicate a piece hardware using c++, I used wireshark to get some network dumps. I noticed that wireshark replaces line feeds with "." (periods). This caused me hours of grief when trying to get a my software to work, hope it helps someone else.

(This is a human bug, not a software bug)

Subject:A version of tail in PHP
Time:12:34 pm.
This is a version of tail which I wrote in PHP, it probably has bugs, so test it in your environment. I didn't intend to reinvent the wheel, this code will be used manipulate the text and send it to a database.

Subject:Disbaling IPv6 in Debian/Ubuntu Linux
Time:10:56 am.
Because we don't have an IPv6 network yet, I would like to disable IPv6 on one of our Linux servers, this is so that it is one less way for someone to break in.

Subject:Shrinking ext3 partitions under Linux
Time:3:02 pm.
DISCLAIMER: For God's sake please _backup_ your data.

Whoops, we've decided to change our partitioning scheme 3 quarters of the way through a server rebuild.

No Problem, we can resize partitions with our good friend parted.
Because ext3 is essentially ext2 with a journal all we need to do is disable the journal first, (otherwise it gets messy.)

Subject:Postfix virtual delivery problems?
Time:8:51 am.
Whilst setting up a new Linux server (Ubuntu) I copied accross the /etc directory from the previous server (same version just corrupted FS). Whoops, I'd changed the main hostname to to an IP address that wasn't on my subnet. This had interesting results on Postfix, I could no longer send email to virtual hosts on that server, instead it threw errors similar to this:

Subject:Comming Home
Time:8:49 pm.
Well, only 19.5 days left untill I come home, abit more if you count the fact I will be in canberra for a week before I get home. I'm sad to be leaving China, but I'm happy that I'm going home to a place where I don't have to think about everything I say.

China has tought me alot about different things, I could say it made me grow up, I finally feel like I've caught up to the maturaty I always saw in the year above me at school.

They are apparantly throwing a party for me next week, and they are actually going to have an MC for the evening, that's kinda kool.

anyway, linuxworld beijing 2005 was kinda kool, I really enjoyed looking at some of the stuff that was available on the market, it was actually good to talk to a fluent english speaker about geeky stuff at a higher level for a change.

oh wells, cya all, I'm going home.

Subject:Kraken Config
Time:2:34 pm.
Hi all,
I've been busy writting a new program that will allow administrators to install SquidNT really easily using a graphical user interface. This might sound easy, but it's got alot of intricate stuff that needs to be done, like aranging the policies to work appropriately. But anyway, I'm rambling so I'll dissapear.

Subject:Kraken Reports 0.6.1
Time:8:54 pm.
I can see it now, you are all probably wondering what the hell Kraken Reports is...

Well... I've been writting this software for about 1.5 years now, and basically it determines statistics from proxy servers. Anyway, I finaly finshed 0.6.1 release more info

Anyway, this has been a long time comming, but I hope to have version 0.7 out by the time I get back to Aus. It's hard to predict how long something like this takes, I wanted it out a month ago, but there were bugs, and a hard disk crash, that made it take alot longer than I expected.

anyway, cya

I've been working steadily now for about 7 years, to me that seems like a long time, and some might say it is. I love what I'm doing currently, but unfortunately, what I do means long and weird hours, I don't mind so much, but it definetely wears me out.

A friend of mine theorizes with nobel prize winners and ecconomists, that only 25% of the population is required to support the human race, while in my mind I believe this is possible, but it has two major problems in my mind:
  • With no competition, wouldn't this stagnate progress in many areas that help make our lives more comfortable?
  • It seems to me that, without a reason to get up every morning, people seem to loose the will to live, and they die alot younger than perhaps they would if they were still working.
I enjoy my work, I'd be bored out of my brains without the daily challanges that come with the field.

Anyway, I'm going to have another rest, I'm still to tired to do anything productive. cya!

Time:8:04 pm.
Hey all,
I guess I better write something about myself... I'm a 21yo from Australia, and I'm a geek... There I said it! I love working on computers, I love BSD,and I cna't get enough of it.

I've been working on UNIX like OS's for about 5 years now, I like to specialize on FreeBSD, but I also work with Linux when I must.

I'm a huge Firefox advocate, and all you people who say IE is a secure good browser may need to get your heads checked.

I'm working out of Beijing at the moment, and I love it, I only have 2.5 months left, and I'm really gonna miss this place. It's been a tough trip so far, bet my beautiful girlfriend Dana has helped me through it... and I her.

Anyway, I'm gonna start doing so work on my website, so cya.
